St. Alban's Challenge
May 2010
Don't
Miss This, Sis!
Episcopal Church Women are gathering for brunch on Wednesday, May 5 at Mi
Cielo Mexican Restaurant in honor of Cinco de Mayo! You can join them at 10
a.m., 950 S.W. Veteran's Way, #102 (near Fred Meyer).
Feeding
Ministry Schedule Changes
St. Alban's continues its outreach in partnership with Jericho Table, the
ministry to feed the hungry in our area. During May, St. Alban's volunteers
will serve every Monday evening at 4:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. We will
skip the month of June, and then serve every Monday in July, skip August and
serve every Monday in September. After this trial period, the Vestry will
review the experience to see if this schedule works for everyone. We are pleased
to share this mission work with members of All People's United Church of Christ.
If you have not yet volunteered, talk with someone who has and consider joining
them! There's a sign-up sheet on the Bulletin Board. For information, contact
Virginia Scott, 541-548-4212.
Bread
Ministry Connects with Neighbor Impact
Tom Bruckheimer is pursuing partnership with Neighbor Impact to increase the
quantity of bread and baked goods needed to supply all who come to St. Alban's
for the Friday Bread Ministry. Tom says this is important because, while the
numbers of people needing bread has not lessened, the supply has. If you would
like to help with the Bread ministry, contact Tom at 541-548-4212.
Men Spreading the Bull
Yes, it's that time of year again. Gard Eriksen, George Hamlin, and Don Scott
are gearing up for another great season for St. Alban's Community Garden.
Word is that four new plots have been requested by neighbors in the vicinity.
There is no charge for participating. If you want to reserve a plot, leave
a message for the men at 541-548-4212.
Surprising
New Twist for ESL Ministry with COCC
Last year a diocesan grant allowed St. Alban's to hold a one-day seminar on
teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). Inspired by this original offering,
a small group of "Albanites"- Julie Bruckheimer, Karen Evans, Lonalee
Hamlin, Cynthia Faust and Carol Maszk- enthusiastically set up a program,
posted flyers, and looked forward to meeting the five people who had indicated
their interest. The first day of class only the teachers showed up! Clearly,
we had a lot to learn.
Undaunted, the group contacted Margie Gregory at Central Oregon Community
College (COCC) and continued their training with her over several days. This
was the beginning of yet another outreach partnership for St. Alban's. They
now find themselves doing things they hadn't imagined or foreseen. While Karen
and Cynthia are tutoring individual students in reading and writing English,
others are branching out. Julie is preparing two students for Citizenship.
Lonalee assists in an open lab. Carol works with a special needs student to
teach him computer skills. The group is excited to see how this fledgling
ministry via partnership with COCC develops. In the meantime, they welcome
your prayers for the students and teachers alike!
